My Monat Skincare Routine

Welcome to one of my most requested blog posts: my skincare routine. One of my goals for April was to be consistent with my skincare routine! I've been using these products for about 8 weeks now, and feel like I know how they work for my skin now. All products are from Monat, they're vegan, plant based & sustainable.   Cleanser I use this cleanser first thing in the morning and right after removing my makeup in the evening.  This is the Be Balanced Foaming Cleanser. It's for oily-combo skin, which is my skin type during the summer! It helps to purify your skin without stripping it, and I feel like my face is very clean after cleansing  Essence To prep my skin for serum, I use the Skin Revitalizing Essence. I put a few shakes into the palm of my hand, rub my hands together to warm it up and then press it into the skin. This essence helps to minimize your pores and helps your skin absorb the products you put on afterwards.  Serum I use two serums, one in the m...

Beauty Thursday: Maybelline Super Stay Foundation Review

Hello Everyone! Welcome to Beauty Thursday. Today I am going to be doing a review of one of my favourite drugstore foundations. Foundation: Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Foundation Packaging: It comes in an open top glass bottle with a screw on cap. It does not come with a pump in North America.  Shade: Classic Ivory. This is not the lightest shade; it is currently a little bit dark for me but if I blend it down my neck you can't tell. Coverage: Medium - Full. You can sheer out this foundation by mixing it with moisturizer, or you can wear it full coverage.  Finish: Matte. Claims: Withstands heat, sweat and humidity.  No transfer- won't rub off.  Flexible, breathable coverage.  Oil-Free.  Suitable for all skin types.  Does it measure up?  Withstands heat, sweat and humidity. True, it does last a long time and there is no need for touch ups.   No transfer- won't rub off. Unfortunately this isn't t...

Fab February: Angelina Jolie Makeup Look

(Picture Courtesy of Pinterest) Welcome to the first day of Fab February! I was at the movie theatre yesterday and I saw the trailer for Angelina Jolie's new film Maleficent , and I thought why not do an Angelina Jolie makeup tutorial. So today's look is based on the picture above, and I will be using the Tarte Beauty and the Box Eye Shadow Quad in In the Buff. These eye shadows are amazing, they are so smooth and silky and have excellent pigmentation. I have been using this quad for over a year, and it is perfect for neutral makeup looks. The colours compliment any eye colour, but blue eyes will especially benefit from the bronzey shades.  Alright enough rambling here is the Angelina Jolie inspired makeup look: Face: 1. Start with your favourite sheer-medium coverage foundation or tinted moisturizer and blend it all over your face and down your neck. Jessie's Picks : L'Oreal True Match Lumi Foundation. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free. 2. Apply...

Casual Sunday: Jessica Alba Inspired Hair and Makeup

(Pictures courtesy of Pinterest)  Jessica Alba is the Queen of casual style. So today's hair and makeup duo is all inspired by her. And as you probably guessed from the pictures, it is going to be a simple ponytail and fresh faced makeup look (my favourite!). This look can work any day of the week but  Mondays and Fridays instantly come to mind. So here we go and hope you enjoy: Let's start with the hair: This look works best on day old hair, but you have just gotten out of the shower, scrunch a thickening mousse through your hair and then blow dry smooth with a paddle brush. Regardless of where you started take a large paddle brush and brush your hair back into a high ponytail. Now you can either pull your hair back super sleek or looser and more casual, both work for this look and as it is casual Sunday do which ever makes you feel more comfortable. Slightly tease your ponytail to create volume. And voila! That is the hair done. Now onto the makeup...

Fashion Friday: Best Fashion Looks of the Week

Here is my weekly roundup of the best fashion looks of the week (my opinion of course). I hope they get you thinking and give you some nice fashion inspiration for the week to come! Hope you enjoy: (Picture courtesy of celebmafia.com) 1. Jessica Alba. As per usual Jessica Alba has made my list :) This outfit is my favourite because hse is all bundle up but still looking chic, which here in Canada is almost a daily feat. (Picture courtesy of celebmafia.com) 2. Reese Witherspoon. Of course she has also made the list! This is the second outfit of hers in the past few weeks in which she has been wearing bright pink/magenta. Maybe it's her new favourite colour? (Photo courtesy of www.reveal.co.uk) 3. Taylor Swift. I love black on black outfits and paired with her red lips this outfit is divine!  That's this week's round of favourite fashion looks. I hope you enjoyed them and were inspired by some of them! xx JD ...

What's in My Travel Makeup Bag?

I have had a number of requests for this post, and I thought now would be a good time to do it since a lot of people are going away on the weekends or on holiday. Most of these products are just in my everyday makeup bag, but a lot of them I have in a travel size, to make them more convenient to carry. By no means are there fewer products, I tend to bring things "just in case" which leads to a lot of unnecessary items being brought along.  So this is what I pack when I am just going to visit family, or whatever, but they can be tapered to wherever you are going whether it is hot or cold there. It is currently rainy and cold in Canada, so let's pretend we're going away on a nice ski weekend, to sip hot chocolate and watch all the skiers go down the hill. Pictures to come! 1. Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer in the Travel Size . This is my go-to primer. It helps with redness, it moisturizes, and it creates a gorgeous base for makeup. The fact that it comes in a conveni...

Must Have Mac Products

This is going to be the first post a series about the best products from different brands both drugstore as well as high-end/department store. So first let's start off with Mac! This brand is definitely one my favourite makeup brands, but only for a few select products. In no  particular order these are my favourite products by Mac: 1. Mac Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. I have this in the shade C4, and I use it all summer long. This powder foundation can give you anywhere from sheer to full coverage. I find that I can pile it on and not look cakey, it won't wear off throughout the day, and if I spritz it with Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, it just looks like skin. Amazing, amazing product! 2.   Mac Studio Tech Foundation . This is an amazing foundation to wear if you are being photographed, or if you are looking for a cream to powder foundation that blends like a dream. This is a medium coverage foundation, and it covers most acne scars, dark marks, and spots....

Beauty Tuesday: Review Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

I bought this product back in early August, and because it super cold all over North America, I thought I would write a review now to warm everyone up. This is a liquid-creme illuminator, and I have it in the shade Topaz which is a goldy-bronze. It is perfect as an all over face primer, or just as a liquid bronzer. It has an SPF25++ which is amazing in the summer. Since Becca is Australian, the SPF is a lot truer than in America, so it is great as a makeup base. I have worn this product for about 2 months,  and I have to say I love it! I love the consistency, it does not cause me to break-out, and it lasts all day. It also has almost like a blurring effect, that blurs all your pores and imperfections. It does not cause me to get oily throughout the day. The only downside I can find is that it has a rather strong smell, but even that is bearable, and does not affect the product. This is definitely a must have for me, and worth the splurge! xx JD

Blogmas Day 1: Kardashian Contour

Kim Kardashian's makeup is far from minimalistic, however her contouring and highlighting techniques are with trying out. Here are the steps to getting a defined face like Kimmy- K: Step 1: Apply a much lighter concealer or cream foundation under your eyes in a triangle shape, along the cheekbone, down the bridge of your nose, on your chin and in the centre of your forehead. Step 2: Apply a much darker cream foundation or concealer in the hollows of your cheeks, along your jawline, the sides of your nose and on the sides of your forehead. Step 3: Take a light foundation in your proper shade, and use it to blend the other foundations. This will create a uniform base, but with less harsh highlighting and contouring. Step 4: Blend away any harsh lines or visible product. Continue with your makeup as normal! This contouring will give you an oval looking face, but without any heavy powders. This is the secret to flawless Hollywood skin.

My Everyday Makeup Look

Sorry I haven't posted in over a week, I was away on a trip :) Now that school has started, I have again realized how much I love sleep more than makeup. The following is my everyday makeup routine that allows me to look polished and feel pretty. This is the makeup I do on the days when I don't just wear mascara and lipbalm. Hope you enjoy! Face Makeup: 1. I start with a primer; I flit in between Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer or Hourglass No28 Primer Serum. If my skin is particularly dry I will use the serum. 2. I apply Clinique Airbrush Illuminating Concealer under my eyes, and then I apply Maybelline 24hr Super Stay Concealer on any blemishes, red spots, or dark spots. 3. I then blend Mac Studio Moisture Tint in Medium over my face with my fingers. I prefer to wear it over my concealer just in case the concealer is little to light (as I'm in between shades right now), and I find blending with my fingers doesn't disturb the concealer underneath. 4. I then dust my...

Skin Type Series: Combination Skin

Combinations Skin: There are different types, and levels of combination skin. There is dry combination skin, oily combination skin, etc. I personally have very dry cheeks and a moderately oily t-zone. When you have combination skin it is hard to find makeup that moisturizes your drier areas as well as controls oil. Here are a few products that I have tried that worked well on my dry combination skin. Please keeping mind that you know your skin best, and so choose whatever works best for you. Primers: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer This primer is my personal favourite. It creates a barrier over dry patches and it does not add any oil to my t-zone. I wouldn’t say this primer controls oil, but it definitely does not add to it. It does contain silicones, but it has yet to cause me to break out, and I have very sensitive skin. It has a creamy light consistency, and it does not feel as if you are putting a heavy product onto your face. I recommend giving the primer about 5-10 mi...

Skin Type Series: Dry Skin

When you have dry skin, you  have to find products that will hydrate your skin without clinging to your dry patches, or dry your skin out even more. Remember to start with a skin regime that is tailored to your skin. Primer: If your foundation stays well without primer your can skip this step. 1. Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer This is lightly hydrating primer that creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup, it works well with sensitive skin. 2. Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer This is silicone free and won't irritate sensitive skin. The primer has a cooling effect which helps tight and dry skin feel more nourished and hydrated. Foundation: Look for foundations that say: luminous, illuminating, hydrating, etc. These foundations will give your skin a glow, take away from any dullness your skin may have, and will glide over any dry patches. 1. Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse This is a creamy moisturizing formula, that glides over dry patches whe...

Skin Type Series: Oily/Acne Prone Skin

Oh the joys of having oily and/or acne prone skin. Believe me, I had it for quite a while (my skin has gotten progressively drier yet I still get occasional spots). No one wants to feel like they are melting, or have to worry all day about blotting. But the fact is that for some people, even after puberty, there skin is oily. This article is strictly about makeup products that I have personally used, that helped me when my skin was broken out, or going through its oily stage. A couple things to keep in mind, oily skin does still need a moisturizer, I used Nivea Soft Moisturizer. I found using a heavier moisturizer helped with my pimples, but of course only do what works for your skin, you know it best. Primers: I truthfully never used one until recently, I personally found that they irritated my skin, and did not help with controlling oil. However, I found a couple of mattifying moisturizers, that worked miracles. I would (and still do) mix them with my foundation, and I found thi...
