Drugstore Fall Makeup Essentials

Fall is one of my favourite seasons to play with makeup! You're no longer dealing with the humidity, sweat on your face, with makeup melting off of it no matter how much powder you use. Matte foundations become your best friend again, you break out those old dark lipsticks and get to finally unleash your inner Morticia.  I thought that I would breakdown some of my favourite drugstore makeup products to use in the Fall:  Foundation: L' Oreal Lumi Foundation in 203. ⁣ ⁣ Concealer: Maybelline Eye Eraser Concealer ⁣ ⁣ Powder: Maybelline Fit Me Loose Powder in 10⁣ ⁣ Bronzer and Crease shade: NYX Bronzer in Medium ⁣ ⁣ Blush: Milani Tea Rose ⁣ Highlight and eyeshadow: Maybelline Molten Rose Gold Highlight⁣ ⁣ Eyeliner: L'Oreal Liquid Eyeliner ⁣ ⁣ Mascara: Maybelline Colossal Big Shot Mascara ⁣ ⁣ Lip liner: Rimmel Tiramisu Lipstick: L'Oreal Shining Peach  ⁣ ⁣ Setting Spray: NYX Matte Setting Spray ⁣

Grey Day Makeup: Using the Urban Decay Naked2 Palette

(Photo courtesy Pinterest) Hello lovely readers! I love grey cold days, and winter in Canada has plenty of those. There is nothing better then being curled up inside while it is cold, grey and rainy outside. Every time the weather is like this I do the same makeup look. It is a gold and bronze smokey eye, with a peachy/pink cheek, and a neutral or red lip (depending on my mood). It is very simple, and takes about 10-15min. It pairs nicely with grey, black, burgundy and cream coloured clothes, so it is super versatile. It also works with most hairstyles, but I prefer to wear my hair straight with this look, as I just think it looks best on me. Face: 1. Start with a foundation primer and apply it all over your face. Choose one that best fits your skin type and skincare needs. For oily skin, Benefit's The Porefessional is great, it fills in your pores and makes your skin appear airbrushed. If you have a normal skin type I'd recommend Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, ...

Warm and Cosy Autumn Nature Inspired Makeup Look

Autumn is my absolute favourite season! I love the weather, fashion, makeup, and of course all the delicious food. Today's makeup look a daytime look inspired by the warm colours of nature during autumn. It focuses on warm eyes, healthy looking skin, and a warm lip.  Face: 1. Start with a medium coverage matte or semi-matte finish foundation and using your fingers or a brush, blend the product into your skin. If you have fairly good skin don't apply foundation everywhere, just dab it where you need a little coverage or skip this step all together.  Clinique Even Better Foundation or Maybelline Superstay 24hr Foundation. 2.  To brighten up your under eye area and keep you looking fresh and awake, apply a light concealer underneath your eyes in a V shape. This will bring light to the centre of the face and appear as a more natural highlight. Apply concealer around your nose, and onto your eye lid to act as a base. Blend out t...

Makeup Monday: Berry Lip and Glowing Skin Makeup

Hello everyone! Welcome to Makeup Monday, it is time to break out your berry lip shades as we are going to create and ethereal and earthy makeup look. The focus is on glowing skin and deep berry stained lips. Face: 1. Start off with a moderate to full coverage foundation and apply it with your favourite foundation brush. We want the skin to be as flawless as possible. I used Clinique Even Better Makeup in Golden Neutral, and applied it with a Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.  2. Contour the face using a matte bronzer and an angled brush. Focus on contouring underneath the cheekbones, then lightly contour the sides of your forehead and under your jaw. I used the bronzer shade from the Elf Contouring Blush and Bronzer duo in St Lucia .  3. Next pick a shimmery peach blush and using a big, fluffy face brush dust it onto the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards.Look for a very shimmery and light blush as this will enhance your glow and keep with the natu...

American Hustle Inspired Smokey Eye

(Courtesy of temptalia.com) Today's post is bit of a mash up, I thought why not do a smokey eye with the Naked Palette, but then add a little inspiration from American Hustle ... And thus this makeup look was born: A smokey eye using the shade "Hustle" from the Urban Decay Naked Palette! Face: 1. Start with a light BB Cream and blend it well into your skin. You can use your fingers or a brush depending on what type of coverage you would like. Jessie's Picks: Maybelline Dream BB Cream. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream. 2. Apply a peachy-pink blush along your cheekbones and blend upwards. Jessie's Picks: Nars Blush in Orgasm. Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush in Peach Satin. 3. Dust your face with a translucent powder to set your BB cream. we are not going to go too heavy on the face, because we want the eye to be the focus, and you don't want to look overly made-up. Jessie's Picks: Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. Clinique Stay Matte Sheer Pressed Po...

Blogmas Day 1: Kardashian Contour

Kim Kardashian's makeup is far from minimalistic, however her contouring and highlighting techniques are with trying out. Here are the steps to getting a defined face like Kimmy- K: Step 1: Apply a much lighter concealer or cream foundation under your eyes in a triangle shape, along the cheekbone, down the bridge of your nose, on your chin and in the centre of your forehead. Step 2: Apply a much darker cream foundation or concealer in the hollows of your cheeks, along your jawline, the sides of your nose and on the sides of your forehead. Step 3: Take a light foundation in your proper shade, and use it to blend the other foundations. This will create a uniform base, but with less harsh highlighting and contouring. Step 4: Blend away any harsh lines or visible product. Continue with your makeup as normal! This contouring will give you an oval looking face, but without any heavy powders. This is the secret to flawless Hollywood skin.

Makeup Monday (Late): Winter Dark Lip Trend

The dark lip, à la Tom Ford, is a major trend and favourite during the fall/winter season. The lipstick can range anywhere from a more wine red to a deep and dark purple. Below is a simple makeup look that would be great for an evening out, but could also be adapted for daytime. Face: 1. Start by using a luminous foundation, preferable one that is quite light. Because we are going so dark on the lips we want to keep the rest of the face very light. Jessie's Picks: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation or Maybelline Fit Me Foundation. 2. Conceal under the eyes and any blemishes. Jessie's Picks: My usual, Mac Studio Finish Concealer for blemishes, and Clinique Airbrush Concealer for the undereyes. 3. Apply a very light warm peach blush just to your cheekbones to add a slight definition to the face. Jessie's Picks: Avon Blush in Dusty Rose or Lancome Blush in Cedar Rose (but be very very light handed with this blush). Eyes: 1. Dust a light matte cream coloured eye shadow all ov...

Style Spotlight: Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham's style is envied by many people in the fashion world. After a number of successful seasons, her fashion line exhibits her love of clear cut lines, neutrals, and versatility. Not everyone has a million dollar budget to spend on clothes, but if you invest in a few select and classic pieces, you can achieve Victoria Beckham's classic look with a much cheaper price tag. Victoria's style is one that flatters almost every single body type, especially petite ladies, which is one of the reasons why her fashion line is so successful. The overall goal is to have a small neutral wardrobe that is versatile, and streamlines your body.  Here are 5 general guidelines to follow, when shopping, that we can steal from Mrs. Beckham, to help us achieve this classic look: 1. Dark colours are your best friend. A dark colour recedes, therefore wearing a darker shade, like black, dark grey, or navy blue, will minimize anything you wish to hide. It will also allow you to high...

Makeup Monday: Victoria Beckham Makeup Look

Victoria Beckham is a style icon, and personally one of my top fashion and beauty inspirations. Her fashion line boasts beautiful structure and lines. One half of Britain's "other royal family" Victoria rules the fashion world with an iron fist, having recently launched another successful denim and accessories line. Her makeup hasn't changed much from her Posh Spice days, it has only become more chic and polished. Her signature smokey eye and nude lip can be adapted for any event, outfit, day or night. Here is a lighter daytime version of her signature look that Victoria has been sporting more and more often. Face: 1. Victoria has oily skin so a primer is a must. Pop a little all over your face, making sure to blend down your neck. Jessie's Pick: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer 2. Smooth a cream foundation over your face, blending it down your neck. Jessie's Picks: Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Foundation or Rimmel Match Perfection Cream Foundation. 3. Dot...

Teen Makeup Look

This is just a quick everyday look for those in high school , or college. It is sweet, feminine, and gives a nice and polished look. Skin: First start by taking care of your skin. Cleansing, toning, and then using a good moisturizer.  Base: 1. Apply a creamy concealer under your eyes, and then a long lasting liquid concealer over any blemishes, acne scars, or red spots. Jessie's Picks: Mac Studio Finish Concealer and Maybelline 24 Super Stay Concealer. 2. Apply a tinted moisturizer over top. Applying your concealer first allows you to be more heavy handed, and then adding a light base avoids the "1 inch face" look. Jessie's Picks: Maybelline BB Cream or Mac Studio Moisture Tint 3. Apply either a cheek stain, or a coral cream blush to the cheek bones and apples of the cheeks. Blend, blend, blend! Jessie's Picks: Tarte Cheek Satin or Avon Cream Blush Stick 4. Powder your skin with a fine finishing powder, and spritz with a setting spray. Eyes: ...

Quick Miranda Kerr Inspired Day Look

Here is just a quick daytime look inspired by Miranda Kerr's daily makeup routine. The focus is on healthy glowing skin with lush lashes and rosy lips. Hope you enjoy! 1. Start with super nourishing moisturizer. Argan Oil or Coconut Oil are great moisturizers as well as work great as a makeup base. 2. Smooth a nourishing tinted moisturizer or bb cream all over your face and neck. Miranda's pick is her KORA Organics Tinted Day Cream. Using a tinted moisturizer allows your own flush to come through, so there isn't really a need for blush; if you would like to wear blush, pick a cream blush in a natural hue. 3. Curl your eyelashes, add apply 2-3 coats of masacara. 4. For your lips apply a sheer lipcolour in a red hue. Miranda's pick is Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Rebelle. The Revlon Kissable Balm Stains would be a cheaper alternative. That's really all there is to it. Its super quick, easy, and creates a put together look in less than 10 minutes. Perfect if yo...

Choosing the Perfect Shade of Eyeliner

Just a quick post to share a really neat trick that I learned. Trying to find a shade of eyeliner that suits your eye colour and makes your eyes pop is hard. So here's the trick: In a well lit room (preferably natural light), look directly into a mirror. The color around your iris is your perfect eye liner shade. Usually people have a ring of darker colour around their iris, and that is colour that I am talking about. Mine is a dark khaki brown shade. Just a fun little trick for finding an eye liner shade. xx JD Please leave me a comment let me know what you think!  If you have any questions or suggestions: Email me: jessicadonna96@gmail.com

Dressing for Your Body Type: Hourglass

If you have an hourglass shape, you are the perfect balance between a pear or apple shaped body type. You have a defined waist with equal bust and hips. When choosing outfits, look for clothes that accentuate your even proportions and your waist. Don't wear pieces that weigh down your upper or lower body. Styles that flatter "hourglass" shapes: Fitted dresses. Pick one in a bold colour or fabric, and pair it with a blazer for a night out. Short and tailored jackets. Jacket that cut or cinch at the waist will draw attention to it. Sweaters or casual clothes with a little bit of fitting. This way you can be casual and still show off your figure. For winter or fall coats, go for wrap style coats, or fit and flare. Pick most coats in a dark or neutral colour, but have one statement coat in a bold colour like cobalt. Slim V-Necked shirts or dresses. The slim v will lengthen your upper body, accentuate your bust, as well as keep you proportioned. Pair a bright v-n...

Dressing for Your Body Type: Apple Shapes

If you are considered an "apple" shape, you generally have a fuller bust, broader shoulders, and a thicker mid section. However, you have slim thighs, hips, and usually arms. You are the opposite to the "pear" shape as you are "top heavy". When picking clothes, try not to draw attention to your middle, emphasize your bust and your slim hips and legs. Styles that flatter "apple" shapes: V-Neck Shirts, A-line dresses, and tops that flow out from your bust and glide over your waist. These will draw attention upwards and will elongate your torso. Try to avoid scoop and boat necked shirts, as they will cause your shoulders to appear broader. Long flowing tops/tunics that fall below your hips will accentuate your lower body, and if the have a little tie around the waist, it will give you a more defined hourglass shape. Pick solid coloured dresses, or ones with a continuous pattern. In general, smaller print patterns are more flattering. Ad...

Dressing for Your Body Type: Pear Shapes

Finally a fashion post! Everyone’s body is different, and therefore different styles flatter each person. The following post series will  give general overviews of the “basic” body shapes. However, whatever you like to wear and makes you feel the best is best for you. Pear Shapes: If you are considered a pear shape, you usually have a small to medium sized bust, small-medium waist, and are largest around your thighs and hips. In other words, you are smaller on top and bigger on the bottom. Generally, wearing a dark colour minimizes, while wearing a bright colour or pattern highl ights, therefore if you are pear shaped, wearing a darker bottom and highlighting your upper body will give you the appearance of a more hourglass figure.   Styles that Flatter Pear Shapes: -           A-Line skirts or dresses . These flatter your upper body, highlight your waist, and glide over your hips and thighs, drawing less attention to ...

My Everyday Makeup Look

Sorry I haven't posted in over a week, I was away on a trip :) Now that school has started, I have again realized how much I love sleep more than makeup. The following is my everyday makeup routine that allows me to look polished and feel pretty. This is the makeup I do on the days when I don't just wear mascara and lipbalm. Hope you enjoy! Face Makeup: 1. I start with a primer; I flit in between Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer or Hourglass No28 Primer Serum. If my skin is particularly dry I will use the serum. 2. I apply Clinique Airbrush Illuminating Concealer under my eyes, and then I apply Maybelline 24hr Super Stay Concealer on any blemishes, red spots, or dark spots. 3. I then blend Mac Studio Moisture Tint in Medium over my face with my fingers. I prefer to wear it over my concealer just in case the concealer is little to light (as I'm in between shades right now), and I find blending with my fingers doesn't disturb the concealer underneath. 4. I then dust my...

Skin Type Series: Combination Skin

Combinations Skin: There are different types, and levels of combination skin. There is dry combination skin, oily combination skin, etc. I personally have very dry cheeks and a moderately oily t-zone. When you have combination skin it is hard to find makeup that moisturizes your drier areas as well as controls oil. Here are a few products that I have tried that worked well on my dry combination skin. Please keeping mind that you know your skin best, and so choose whatever works best for you. Primers: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer This primer is my personal favourite. It creates a barrier over dry patches and it does not add any oil to my t-zone. I wouldn’t say this primer controls oil, but it definitely does not add to it. It does contain silicones, but it has yet to cause me to break out, and I have very sensitive skin. It has a creamy light consistency, and it does not feel as if you are putting a heavy product onto your face. I recommend giving the primer about 5-10 mi...

Skin Type Series: Dry Skin

When you have dry skin, you  have to find products that will hydrate your skin without clinging to your dry patches, or dry your skin out even more. Remember to start with a skin regime that is tailored to your skin. Primer: If your foundation stays well without primer your can skip this step. 1. Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer This is lightly hydrating primer that creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup, it works well with sensitive skin. 2. Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer This is silicone free and won't irritate sensitive skin. The primer has a cooling effect which helps tight and dry skin feel more nourished and hydrated. Foundation: Look for foundations that say: luminous, illuminating, hydrating, etc. These foundations will give your skin a glow, take away from any dullness your skin may have, and will glide over any dry patches. 1. Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse This is a creamy moisturizing formula, that glides over dry patches whe...

Fall 2013 Red Eye Makeup Trend

This Fall, red based plum eye shadows were seen  on almost all of the runways. This fall you may want to incorporate this shade into your daily makeup, but don't it to be too harsh. Here are some ideas of how to get the on-trend plum eye, but in a classy, and minimalist way. Mix the Textures: Mixing/layering different textures will make the red toned eye makeup more wearable. For example using shimmery cream shadow all over your lid, and then layering a matte shadow in the crease and outer corner. OR Try just wearing a dampened plum red eyeshadow as a liner, or a light wash over your lids. If you are planning on going full out and bold on your eyes, make sure  to keep your skin and lips very light, so as not to have them fighting for focus. Jessie's Picks: Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Metallic Merlot Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in #11 Covergirl Smokey Shadowblast in Purple Plume Flower Colour Play Eyeshadow in Awesome Blossom Nars Eyeshad...
